Literacy Caravan

In 2008, Scholastic, the world’s largest bookseller, and the Library Foundation joined forces to bring a mobile classroom on wheels to the city – RV decked out with literacy and art activities; space for story time; creative exploration, counting and more; and everyone leaves with a book. In 2011, the Caravan expanded its partner base when it received funding from the United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County. The Caravan continues to travel across all quadrants of the city making stops at schools, daycare centers, and even local H-E-Bs. The outreach efforts have reached close to 125,000 area youth and families since its inception, and the Caravan has given away close to 50,000 books to encourage reading in the home. Staff continues to get letters and requests to return; and like the Ice Cream Truck – everyone knows about it and wants it in their neighborhood. With its growing popularity the waitlist has continued to grow.
