Father’s Day Literary Luncheon

Andrew Carnegie gifted the Alamo City its first public library in 1903. Born in Scotland to modest circumstances, Carnegie emigrated to the United States with his parents in 1848 and became a self-made steel tycoon and one of the wealthiest businessmen of the 19th century. He dedicated his later life to philanthropic endeavors giving away 90% of his fortune and founded 1,679 public libraries in the United States alone. He is the father of public libraries in America. In remembrance of Carnegie’s humanitarian efforts and stewardship of the free public education that libraries provide, the Foundation is honoring local leader, philanthropist, conservationist and long time Library Foundation benefactor, George C. “Tim" Hixon with a Father’s Day Literary Luncheon on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the San Antonio Country Club. In keeping with Tim’s love of the outdoors, fishing, hunting and land conservation, we are thrilled to welcome our special guest speaker, David DiBenedetto, Editor-in-Chief of the award winning Southern lifestyle magazine, Garden & Gun, and author of several books, most recently, S is for Southern: A Guide to the South, from Absinthe to Zydeco.

Please join us for lunch, studded with Southern favorites, followed by a lively conversation with DiBenedetto, moderated by professional wingshooter and fellow southerner and sportsman, Brandon Simmons. Topics will range from Southern traditions and contemporary culture, the best places to eat, drink and play in the South, stories about family and four-legged friends, and perhaps even a fish tale, or two.

The Foundation is celebrating its 35th year of strengthening the library in service to our community. Funds raised from the luncheon will allow the Foundation to continue its efforts on behalf of the library.
