San Antonio Public Library Foundation - Pride on the Westside

Pride on the Westside

The City of San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s Healthy Start program promotes healthy babies, healthy families, and healthy neighborhoods. Healthy Start organizes resident led task forces throughout San Antonio to identify assets in the community, and organize projects to improve neighborhoods.

The West Resident Leadership Team developed an art project based on an identified need for youth to express ideas about where and how they live, and have a positive focus for their imagination and creativity. Art students from Edgewood Fine Arts Academy submitted work that shows how youth can help bring pride to their community, rather than getting caught up in destructive behaviors such as graffiti in our neighborhoods. Students at Edgewood Academy of Fine Arts were asked to present an art design that represented and promoted culture, beliefs and tradition in the West Side. Metro Health’s Healthy Start Program is pleased to announce that Audrie Morin’s design of “La Llorona” was recognized as the winning submission.

The art piece will be showcased over the next three months at three different libraries in San Antonio and the Westside community, including Las Palmas Library, Bazan Library and Collins Garden Library. The “Traveling La Llorona” Art Portrait tour will wrap up with a closing reception at Collins Garden Library on Tuesday, July 17th.

By showcasing these artworks in partnership with the San Antonio Public Library, this project helps to promote literacy, art, healthy neighborhoods and the power of families.
