As a part of the Public Library’s 100th birthday (2003), the Foundation’s present was simply to give a “birthday gift book” to every baby born during the centennial year. Years later, we continue to provide our San Antonio babies with a literacy bag, a bilingual book (Arte Kids), library information, and a pamphlet with reading strategies. The low-key but impactful Born to Read initiative continues to inspire newborns and their families by providing their much loved first books.
A partnership with the San Antonio Museum of Art and Trinity University Press produced a series of bilingual board books (Arte Kids) that feature art pieces from the Museum’s vast collection. The Born to Read and Arte Kids initiatives are tools to help parents recognize their critical roles as their child’s first teacher, and that the library is there for them with an unlimited supply of FREE services to nurture their family’s literary growth.
